Regulators Are Tightening the Grip Around Data Integrity
The CIA triad is a widely used information security model that describes data security from a confidentiality, availability, and integrity perspective. So far confidentiality and availability has been given the most attention in regulations and standards. However, policy makers are finally addressing the issue and putting more focus on data integrity to close the gap and put more focus on data integrity in revised or new regulations.
In the ever-evolving landscape of technology and cyber security, the importance of data integrity is emerging as a fundamental concern. Unfortunately, in the past, many regulatory frameworks have failed to adequately address this critical aspect of information security. However, as the ramifications of data breaches and manipulation become increasingly apparent, there is a growing realization among policymakers that data integrity must be given greater prominence within regulations.
Recognizing the critical role data integrity plays in preserving trust, regulatory bodies across the globe are now actively seeking to address this issue. They understand that existing regulations must be updated and new ones introduced (such as NIS2 and DORA) to effectively protect data integrity in an increasingly interconnected and data-dependent world.
This shift in focus is driven by several factors but most importantly by the need to update the traditional approach to data security. Traditional regulations have primarily focused on confidentiality and availability, often neglecting the equally crucial aspect of data integrity. This oversight has left data susceptible to malicious activities, including unauthorized alterations, or intentional manipulation, which can have far-reaching consequences for individuals, businesses, and public trust.
New regulations are emerging, while existing ones are being revised to encompass data integrity considerations comprehensively. These regulatory initiatives emphasize the need for organizations to implement robust security controls, data governance frameworks, and risk management strategies specifically tailored to safeguard data integrity. They encourage the adoption of technologies such as hashing, digital signatures, and audit trails to prevent unauthorized modifications, detect tampering, and preserve data integrity throughout its lifecycle.
We've analyzed a number of new and updated regulations addressing the challenge of data integrity. Furthermore, we have investigated for which type of data, data integrity is a crucial aspect (e.g. log data, sensor data, patient data or chain of custody data). Please refer to the table below for a short snapshot of standards and regulations that might apply in your circumstances.
