Flip the switch

Event Horizon – Global Summit on Blockchain Technology in the Energy Sector – is the one exclusive annual event focused on energy blockchain solutions for a future based solely on renewable resources. It is a game-changing platform for the development of a customer focused, fair energy future. Once a year, Event Horizon unites the Who’s Who of both the traditional energy and innovative blockchain sectors. The motto of 2018 “Flip the switch & turn on the power of tomorrow. Today!” calls for a paradigm change and takes guests on a unique “journey” into the future of the industry. Let’s look towards a new horizon! Let’s shape the future – together!

850 experts, key decision makers and start-ups joined this year the annual event and about 80 Energy and Blockchain leaders were on the rotating stage. Worth mentioning is that they came from around 50 countries from 5 continents.

Startup Pitches

The dominant location of energy blockchain innovators is still Europe, home to 25 out of 41 startups. The early stage of energy blockchain innovation is confirmed when taking a closer look at these companies. . Nearly 50% of the startups were founded between 2017 and 2018.
A wide spectrum of applications is explored by the energy blockchain startups.
Most of them specialise in these three fields: Peer-to-peer trading and distributed generation of energy, renewable energy integration and demand response.

At the Event Horizon, 40 of the leading blockchain energy startups from all over the world were present. In short 20-minute pitches they presented their business models, innovative solutions and use cases. Event Horizon enabled every startup to meet relevant investors, colleagues and the community at the conference.

Presentation of D3A, EW Origin and Parity Substrate

Energy Web Foundation used the event to present two open-source solutions: a proof-of-concept for their decentralised autonomous area agent (D3A) and EW Origin (https://energyweb.org/2018/04/17/energy-web-foundation-unveils-major-blockchain-milestones-at-event-horizon/) recording the provenance and automatically tracking the ownership of renewably generated electricity.

Additionally, Parity Technologies provided some insights into “Substrate”. They describe it as being like Express or another web application framework, but for building distributed or decentralised systems such as cryptocurrencies or a message bus. Just as most web applications shouldn’t need to reimplement their own version of HTTP, they argue that it is wasted effort for every team creating a new blockchain to have to implement all the networking and consensus code from scratch.

We are really curious about the next steps and releases of this new blockchain tech and look forward to next year’s Event Horizon.
